Divorce

The legal process by which a registered marriage is officially ended.

Deputyship

A Deputy is appointed by a court to make decisions on behalf of a person who lacks/has lost mental capacity should the person NOT have made an LPA. The Deputy can be an individual or a licensed trust company or parents with children with special needs.

Power of Attorney (POA)

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document created by a person who appoints another person to act on his behalf. The general POA gives the donee authority to act on behalf of the donor in all circumstances unless the POA document itself restricts the power of the donee in certain situations. The Specific POA gives limited powers to a donee over specified matters.

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

An LPA is a legal document that takes effect automatically should you subsequently lose mental ability by allowing you to appoint someone you trust to manage your personal welfare and matters concerning your property and affairs.

Deed Poll

The Deed Poll is a legal document executed to effect a change in name, including the ethnic name, marriage name or baptism name.

Wills

A will is a legal document that states your wishes regarding distribution of your assets and/or care of your children (under 21) after your death. If you die without a will the government decides what happens to your assets.

Protection from Harassment Act (POHA)

Applications for Protection Orders, Expedited Protection Orders against parties who are not legally married to each other and Orders for Non-Publication of Confidential Information

• Against online or offline harassment or sexual harassment
• Engaging in threatening, abusive behaviour for eg like stalking
• Doxxing (publishing information about identity of an individual on social media which exposes a person to harassment, danger, alarm or distress)
